Mental health care is important, but many patients feel unsure about how to access help through medical aid. The process can feel confusing, especially when you are already anxious, overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted.

One of the most useful first steps is understanding what your specific plan may cover. Some plans provide funding for GP consultations, mental health-related assessments, referrals, follow-ups or certain reports. Other plans have limits, exclusions or authorisation requirements.

Dr Sebastião’s practice checks medical aid details on the day of booking to see whether funds may be available. If approval is confirmed, payment may be processed through the medical aid. If benefits are depleted or unavailable, private payment options can be discussed.

Every plan is different. Standard consultation time may be covered while extended time, reports, forms or administrative work may not be. Clear communication before and during the appointment helps prevent surprises.

Consultations are generally booked for 30 minutes at GP rates. If a consultation needs more time, a prolonged consultation fee may apply. Additional costs are explained upfront where possible.

Mental health care should not feel like a financial mystery. Requesting a consultation allows the practice to check your details and explain the options available to you before your appointment.
